The Purpose of Education

"There has only ever been one purpose of education in any culture for any student: to prepare responsible adults."

I love this.

  1. Thanks for the link...an excellent presentation.

I was struck with how he focused on relationships in the school...relationships between adults and students and relationships between adults and adults. During my teaching years I worked in several different schools. The ones which seemed to work best were those where the staff worked together towards a single set of goals. Good leadership is vital to this effort -- from teachers and administrators.

I also was gratified that he spent so much time on the importance of building relationships with students. We know that the teachers we loved and respected (and therefore worked hardest for) as children were those who we could tell cared about us and treated US with respect. It's a great reminder that there's much more to being an educator than just telling students facts and preparing them for tests.
